I learned to sew when I was a child. Ever since then, I have enjoyed creating things and tailoring clothing with my sewing skills. But for me, sewing is just a hobby, not a means of survival.

On the other side of the world, millions of women in Asia are trapped in the cycle of poverty. Abused and mistreated, the women of Asia are desperate. In a culture that values men over women, it is very difficult for any to survive, but especially difficult for widows. Viewed as one who is cursed by her culture, a widow is blamed for her husband’s death and abandoned by her family. The women of Asia desperately need hope. They need to know that Jesus loves and values them! And sewing machines are one way to do that. For a woman in Asia, a sewing machine represents two things: a way to put food on the table (and maybe save her from resorting to prostitution or selling her child to keep from starving), and a way to demonstrate the love of Christ! For these women, sewing machines represent so much more than a hobby—they represent new life! I truly believe that uplifting these desperate women and giving them hope is a one of the most significant things we can do in this life.
